Preparing bank statements for a visa application

Financial evidence should accurately describe the resources you plan to use for your trip. There is no single amount or statement period that this guide can safely prescribe for every destination. Start with the current official instructions for your visa category and circumstances, including any specified minimum funds or document format.

Check the requested evidence

Confirm which account records are requested, the period they should cover and whether certification, translations or other supporting documents are required. Do not assume that a stamped statement is always necessary or that an online statement is always acceptable. Check the applicable instructions before paying for additional documents.

Make a realistic travel budget

List expected transport, accommodation and everyday costs, then identify who will pay for each part. Keep estimates separate from bookings already paid for. If someone is supporting the trip, check which sponsorship information the authority asks for rather than assuming a transfer alone establishes support.

Explain genuine transactions

Keep records that explain relevant income or transfers, such as an employer's payment record or documentation of a sale. Use documents that accurately describe what happened. Do not temporarily borrow money to create a misleading impression or edit statements. If a record contains an error, ask the issuing institution how to correct it.

A balance, income level or particular transaction does not guarantee a visa decision. This article offers document-organisation advice, not a financial eligibility assessment.

Review the file together

  • Check names and account details; ask about genuine differences in spelling or format.
  • Check whether the documents cover the requested dates.
  • Compare your funding explanation with your actual records.
  • Retain copies and protect account information when sharing it.

Book My Trip can help organise the questions you need answered and review whether your preparation is internally consistent. Confirm the current official checklist before submission. If you are unsure how a financial rule applies to your circumstances, seek clarification from the relevant authority rather than relying on an illustrative budget or a previous applicant's experience.

A note on this article. This is general guidance based on what we see day to day — it isn't legal advice, and consulate requirements change. Check the current position with the relevant consulate, or ask us about your specific situation.
