Preparing for a visa appointment or interview

If you are asked to attend an appointment or interview, follow the specific instructions you receive. Whether attendance is required, what to bring and how the meeting is conducted can vary. This guide does not assume an interview requirement or duration for any particular destination.

Know the application you submitted

Read your answers and check that you understand the travel plan and supporting records. If an agent helped prepare the application, you should still know what it says. Do not memorise an invented account or rehearse information that does not reflect your circumstances.

Review useful questions

  • What is the actual purpose of your trip?
  • What dates and activities are you proposing?
  • Who will pay, and what records explain that?
  • Which details of your situation need clarification?
  • Has anything changed since you submitted the application?

Prepare documents according to the instructions

Check the appointment location, identification instructions and restrictions on items you can bring. Organise the requested records so that you can find them. Ask the provider about an instruction you do not understand rather than assuming a past applicant's checklist applies.

Answer accurately

Listen to the question and give an honest answer. Ask for clarification if needed. If you do not know a detail, say so rather than inventing it. Describe relatives, employment, funding and previous decisions accurately wherever asked; this guide does not prescribe an answer intended to secure approval.

Preparation is not a prediction of a visa decision. Clothing, rehearsed phrasing or a particular document cannot be promised to produce a favourable outcome.

After an appointment, keep any receipt, decision or request for information. Read the actual instructions for further action and check any stated deadline. If you receive a refusal, do not infer a legal meaning from a generic internet explanation. Book My Trip can help organise your documents and questions; seek appropriately qualified advice when a decision needs legal interpretation.

A note on this article. This is general guidance based on what we see day to day — it isn't legal advice, and consulate requirements change. Check the current position with the relevant consulate, or ask us about your specific situation.
